The undertone is the lowest and longest-ringing of the three. On a bowl this size it can fall below 60 Hz, into a range where human hearing is far less sensitive than it is in the middle of the spectrum. You will hear it, but it tends to register as a physical presence in the chest and through the floor rather than as a pitch you could hum back. It is also the last tone still sounding as the bowl fades.

The fundamental is the one you will notice first. It sits where your ears are considerably more sensitive, and it is usually the tone that emerges and sustains when you rub the rim.

The overtone rides above the fundamental and supplies the shimmer and complexity that separates a handmade Himalayan bowl from a synthesized tone.

Two things worth knowing before you play it. Your mallet chooses which tone sings: a soft or yarn-covered mallet tends to wake the lower tone, while a harder, bare wood or suede mallet often locks onto the higher tone instead. And because these partials are inharmonic, you will sometimes see two of the three notes sharing a letter name at different octaves. That is not a listing error. It means those two partials happen to fall close to an octave apart, which gives the bowl an unusually unified voice.
